Venezuela's Capriles wins primary, seeks to beat Chavez (Reuters)

CARACAS (Reuters) ? Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles easily won a primary election on Sunday to become the unity candidate against President Hugo Chavez, vowing to end 13 years of socialist rule that he said has left the OPEC nation in crisis.

Capriles' candidacy had a firm start as unexpectedly high participation of nearly 3 million people in the primary vote signaled the opposition can mobilize supporters ahead of the October 7 presidential election.

The 39-year-old, center-left state governor's bid was further bolstered by a show of unity among other candidates from the opposition, which for years suffered from internal disputes that ultimately benefited Chavez.

Yet with Chavez riding high in polls, still popular among the poor and spending massively on welfare projects, Capriles will need to go beyond the vague promises and feel-good factor of his primary campaign if he is to unseat the president.

"This is about the unity of all Venezuelans that want progress," Capriles told thousands of cheering supporters gathered outside his campaign headquarters on Sunday night.

"We have a country in crisis and a government dedicated only to partisan politics."

His strong showing, winning 62 percent of the primary vote, will likely lift Venezuelan bonds, which react well to any news suggesting a change from Chavez's state-centered economic model.

"This result is still market positive as the opposition showed mobilization capacity and empowered the candidate," wrote Goldman Sachs analyst Alberto Ramos.

Venezuelan bonds, among the most highly traded emerging market securities, rose following Chavez's cancer diagnosis last year but slipped again as the former soldier staged what appeared to be quick recovery.

NEW FACE

Part of a new guard of young opposition leaders, Capriles has cast himself as a fresh face in a country dominated by Chavez's militant leftism and constant confrontation.

The grandson of Polish fugitives from Nazi persecution, Capriles says he admires Brazil's "modern left" economic model, which has helped pull tens of millions of people out of poverty through a mix of state spending and respect for private enterprise.

He has promised to address the day-to-day concerns of Venezuelans such as high crime, unemployment and constantly rising prices, and spend less time on ideological crusades.

"This is what we were hoping for, a man like Capriles who has the power and the responsibility to govern this country, because Venezuela needs to change," said Leila Sutil, 58, a community organizer.

Capriles says he will maintain the best of Chavez's welfare policies, while only gradually dismantling controversial measures that include price and currency controls plus nationalizations of everything from farms to oil service companies.

He has indicated he will steer Venezuela's international alliances away from Chavez's faraway, ideologically motivated friendships with Iran, Belarus, Syria and other anti-U.S. governments.

It will be a hard sell, however, to convince voters in Venezuela's rural backwaters and urban slums won over by Chavez's potent combination of fierce nationalism, abundant charisma and huge welfare programs.

State media immediately began describing Capriles as a "right-wing" candidate, with one prominent late-night commentator questioning the opposition's figure of 2.9 million participants.

Heavy on generalizations and in a hoarse voice, Capriles' acceptance speech showed his public style is still far behind the smoothly loquacious Chavez, who recently spoke for a record-breaking 9 1/2-hour in a speech to Congress.

"The guy may have won the primaries, but he's so lacking in charisma, it's not going to be easy for him ... " sniped deputy foreign minister Temir Porras via Twitter.

Foldable displays have long been talked about as a convenient way to make larger displays more portable and easier to slip into your pocket. And in 2008 they very nearly even made it to market with PolymerVision's Readius.

But researcher Juergen Steimle reckons that perhaps we're missing a trick. Steimle has recently left the Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany, to join the Fluid Interfaces group at MIT's Media Lab. He has developed a range of ways to use the folds in foldable displays to create some quite novel forms of interaction.

Steimle created projection-based display using six overhead infrared cameras and two high-definition digital projectors to track the movement of and project onto a passive white tablet, which the user holds. With a number of different designs, Steimle created a range of tablets containing sets of spring-loaded, reversible hinges so that they could be folded like a book or a pamphlet.

By monitoring the way the tablets are folded, Steimle's system uses the act of folding and the resulting form of the tablet as a means of interaction. So hold the tablet flat and it is treated as one display, like an iPad. Start to bend it in the middle like a book and it will switch to a two display mode.

Steimle also uses the back of the tablet. So close the tablet like a book and menu options can be displayed on the "cover" which when selected will alter the contents inside the book. And because the cameras are able to detect the angle of rotation of the hinges it is possible to even use them to adjust things like the colour, contrast or volume.

Steimle will be presenting the work later this month at the Tangible, Embedded and Embodied Interaction Conference in Kingston, Ontario.

South Korea man charged for re-tweeting North, says group

Amnesty International on Thursday called for the release of a South Korean activist accused of breaking security laws by re-tweeting messages from the North Korean government?s Twitter account.

The human rights campaign group said Park Jeonggeun, an activist with the Socialist Party, intended to lampoon North Korea's recently-deceased dictator by re-posting the message ?long live Kim Jong-il? to his own followers.

The New York Times reported that Jeonggeun, who it said was a photographer who specialized in taking pictures of babies, was detained last month on charges of violating the National Security Law which bans undefined ?acts that benefit the enemy?.

It reported that the Twitter account Mr. Park was accused of re-tweeting is run by the North Korean government Web site, Uriminzokkiri.com, which South Korean news media regularly cite for their stories.

Amnesty International said it had spoken to Jeonggeun, who was formally charged on Wednesday. It said he has been held at Seoul Detention Centre since 11 January and could face up to seven years in jail.

Sam Zarifi, Amnesty International?s Asia-Pacific Director, said: ?This is not a national security case, it?s a sad case of the South Korean authorities? complete failure to understand sarcasm.

?Imprisoning anyone for peaceful expression of their opinions violates international law but in this case, the charges against Park Jeonggeun are simply ludicrous and should be dropped immediately.

?Park is a member of a party which openly criticises North Korea but the absurd case against him is not an isolated one. For too long South Korean authorities have been using the National Security Law to restrict basic freedoms and gag civil society in the name of national security.?

In an article on its website, Amnesty International quoted the activist as saying:??My intention was to lampoon North Korea's leaders for a joke; I did it for fun. I also uploaded and changed North Korean propaganda posters on Twitter - I replaced a smiling North Korean soldier?s face with a downcast version of my own face and the soldier?s weapon with a bottle of whisky.?

The article also said that, "despite the end of military rule in South Korea, authorities have increasingly used the [law] to harass critics of the government?s North Korea policies since 2008".

The New York Times reported that 151 people were interrogated on suspicion of violating the security law in 2010, up from 39 in 2007.

Market players began to disregard all the premature ?good news? coming from Europe and started making better investment decisions.

At the beginning, they were bullish on any positive news, and then funneled all their money into Treasuries ? with a return of around 2% ? when that ?good news? turned out to be less than credible.

As we have said here many times, ?Save yourself the heart attack of this rollercoaster ride. This is a time when trusted strategies can deliver peace of mind.?

And so with all the volatility, the clear strategy was to reduce risk while gaining the best possible return. For this reason, dividend-paying stocks have been attracting investors of all types for their high yields and market-trumping returns. The yields of dividend-payers have dwarfed those of 10-year Treasuries.

But when everyone is preaching the same game plan, there can be some drawbacks. So we must ask: With all their newfound popularity, have dividend paying stocks become too pricey?

Here are three important factors to look at:

1. Investors poured $31.3 billion into mutual funds and exchange-traded funds that invest in dividend payers last year, nearly five times the amount in 2010, according to researcher Lipper Inc.
2. All equity funds and ETFs lost around $33.5 billion.
3. Stocks, in the Standard & Poor?s 500 Index, that pay dividends posted a 1.4% total return in 2011, while non-payers fell 7.6%.

The flood of funds into dividend payers is making their stocks more expensive.

Here?s how it usually happened over the years; dividend stocks trade at lower price-to-earnings ratios, with the expectation that they?ll grow less quickly than other stocks.

This still remains true. However, the gap between payers and non-payers is shrinking. If you look at the end of 2010, the average price-to-earnings ratio of non-payers in the S&P 500 was 37% higher than the average P/E for payers; presently it?s at 33%.

This recent phenomena has been caused by the introduction of the short-term investor into the dividend market and the drawback of the higher prices could mean that they may not be able to duplicate last year?s strong performance. The fact that the sector is ?en vogue? has also seen some yields push down.

Don?t Fret Long-Term Investors

If you?re investing or thinking about investing in dividend-payers, you have to keep this a long-term strategy because that will be the most beneficial play.

Because they tend to be less volatile than non-payers, they tend to lag in a bull market, but hold up better when markets falter, says Howard Silverblatt, the senior index analyst at Standard & Poor?s. ?Basically, the dividend acts as an anchor holding the stock in place,? he says.

And because many companies increased their dividends over the course of 2011, dividend investors will be getting more income through 2012. ?Unless companies cut [their dividends], you almost have to get a double-digit increase this year,? Silverblatt says.

Don?t Overpay

Investors should focus on companies that are still growing their dividends and not chase yields. ?Dividend growers are great inflation protection because that yield is increasing every year,? says Steven Roge, a portfolio manager at R.W. The smart grid communications space is already noisy and contentious. Technologies such as RF mesh, point-to-point, powerline, 3G, 4G/LTE, WiMax, WiFi and ZigBee are already competing.

Now a UK company says TV white space could be a superior solution. TV white space is the "buffer zone" that separates over-the-air TV broadcasts. As television goes digital, many people argue that space should be released for other uses.

?

UK-based TTP argues that it would be ideal for the smart grid, with potential to deliver information at high data rates over long distances, with low latency and at low cost.
