Mega Millions jackpot hits $540 million, still rising

Seven-time Florida lottery winner, Richard Lustig offers tips to winning the $500 million dollar jackpot.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

The Mega Millions lottery hit $540 million on Thursday, and people endured long lines for a chance at winning the hefty jackpot ? an amount that could rise as more tickets are sold for Friday?s drawing.

?I have never seen so many people inside one store,? Jessie Rae Vaglivielo, a clerk at Hallelujah Junction, a one-stop gas and convenience store?in Honey Lake, Calif., near the Nevada border, told msnbc.com on Thursday. It was the California woman?s fifth day on the job and she didn?t have time to talk -- she was selling tickets to dozens of people who had lined up.

Vaglivielo laughed when asked if she was going to buy a ticket. "No, I don't play," she said, adding "but there are a lot of people here who do, and I gotta go."

Nobody matched all six numbers in Tuesday's regular draw, and the total jackpot has been growing since. With a $540 million total, the lump sum payment is estimated at $389.8 million, according to lottery officials.

Mega Millions is is played in 42 states, plus Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Players pay $1 for a ticket and must pick five numbers from 1 to 56 plus a Mega number from 1 to 46 to win the jackpot. The odds of winning are 1 in about 176 million, according to the official Mega Millions website.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot ever won was $390 million in March 2007, when the prize was split between two tickets sold in Georgia and New Jersey.

The pot has grown massively since the last winner on Jan. 24?won $72 million.

Marie Hartwell-Walker, Ed.D.: Post-Divorce Recovery Work

It's finally over. The wrangling with lawyers, the fight over finances, the decisions about custody arrangements and the debate over who owns the newer car are done. As you settle into your apartment or reorganize your home, you can't help but think, "Now what?" Well-meaning friends and family members, worried that you will be alone and lonely, urge you to get back into the dating pool. Don't. Not yet. Not until you've done some serious personal recovery work.

Being newly divorced is a time of grieving. Yes, grieving. Even if you are relieved, even if you've spent months or years trying to get out of a toxic relationship and especially if you didn't want the divorce, an important chapter in your life is now over. You are freed from the relationship -- it's true. But you've also suffered some losses. Your identity as a partnered person is over for now. Your future as you thought it would be has been changed. You may have lost your home. There are some people you thought of as friends who have sided with your ex. Others who are coupled don't seem to know how to include a newly single friend in couple-oriented activities and have dropped out of your life. Still others are afraid that divorce is contagious and have distanced themselves. Such losses deserve respect and mourning. To skip right over your feelings of loss, anger, regret, or sadness is to deny yourself an important chapter in healing.

This is also a time for self-reflection. Relationships start with attraction, hope and optimism. Two people move to commitment in the belief that they can make a life together. What happened? The end of a relationship is rarely entirely one person's fault. If you don't take the time to think about your end of the breakdown, you are in danger of repeating the same errors in judgment, thinking, or behaviors that contributed to the relationship's demise.

It's a useful exercise to try to write the story of the slide to divorce as if you are entirely at fault. Not that it is your fault entirely -- of course it's not. But honestly thinking about a story that assigns all responsibility to yourself will show you where perhaps you did make mistakes. Did you ignore red flags at the beginning? Were you so desperate to be in a relationship that you blinded yourself as to who the other person truly is? Did you cave to family pressure to not let this one go? Did you fall into repeating negative aspects of your parents' relationship? Did you give in too much or too little? Do you snuff your own needs and feelings? Are you too angry, too possessive, too passive, too giving? Whatever "too" you are is something to work on. As the old saying goes, "Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it."

Your inner work isn't complete until you can move to a place of forgiveness -- of your ex and of yourself. If you are still angry with your ex, you are still involved with her or him. You can't move cleanly into a new relationship until you are emotionally freed from the old one. No, you don't have to forget all the mean things that were said or selfish things that were done. You don't have to pretend that your ex is a better person than she or he is. But stepping back to see how your ex is also reverberating from the past or handicapped by unresolved issues can help you have some compassion and perhaps come to a forgiving place.

Finally, forgive yourself. If you are furious with yourself for having spent months or years in a painful relationship, if you are calling yourself stupid for being blind or for allowing yourself to be manipulated, controlled, or cowed, you are still engaged in the relationship. Yes, acknowledge your part, but then move to a more compassionate self-understanding. Forgive your younger you who was less mature, more impulsive, or less wise. Mourn the experience, learn from it, and forgive and you're ready to move on.

3 Glaring Difficulties with Network Marketing And Multi-Level ...

Multi-Level Marketing, described through the acronym MLM, or terms like ?Network Marketing? or ?Home-Based Business,? has been online in certain form for years at this point. Yet million of persons have already been included in one (if not more). In truth, I guarantee either you, or a person may be ?in? among the following companies: Avon, Mary Kay, Tupperware, Melaluca, Costal Vacations, Fortune High-Tech Marketing (FHTM), Xango, Monavie, Pampered Chef, Cutco, Scentsy, Amway, etc. I like to recommend you quest for a what do i need to open a business prior to your purchase.

In the iconic ring of ?Avon calling,? towards the famous pink Cadillacs of Mary Kay, towards the garage-fulls of Amway appear as healthy have foisted off upon themselves, many individuals have tried MLM as well as few if any do above break even. Additionally it is recommended that you check into antiaging product to acquire more information.

Let?s be clear about a few things. First, this site will likely be brutally honest about MLM, and that means stating exactly what does work, and what does not work. For much more information, you possibly can go to buy whitening soap.

In spite of this, Second: I enjoy MLM. I?m sure that the concept works ? if many of the parts will be in place. Appears linked to a few, and I?ve made thousands with them.
However, In addition, i feel that there are a number of companies in existence which don?t meet a few key evaluation points and which force these phones fail.

I?ve personally been included in among the above companies, am presently using the services of two others, used products from at the least 3, and known dozens of folks who suffer from tried such businesses before (the majority of them unsuccessful). Nearly half people in the US have purchased something through direct sales/network marketing/MLM. This being true, why are so many so unsuccessful?

Well, there are a number of reasons. Here?s three.

1) Lack of ability to Judge A company Or Business Model

If you have never been in business before, or were forced to think being a business proprietor, you can get lured into smooth pitches about minimal effort and maximum rewards. When you?ve got a tremendously gregarious personality, and naturally network well with other people, it could be a breeze to develop a large organization (or ?Down Line?).

But a majority of individuals will never be aware of the ?levels? or ?matrices? filled beyond a few levels, in case they don?t really have a very sociable personality, they don?t really even stand the opportunity.

This is just because?

2) Poor Training

The most recognized thing that kills network marketing businesses is lack of training.

The number-one evidence of here is the super-abundance of ?gurus? and ?trainers? and ?elite tips for generating leads/sales/distributors/associates? and ?turn-key, automated systems? which might be in existence, earning vast amounts of money from the a lot of associates working to make these materials work.

We?ve all seen the one that ?gets into? a company, and after that spams their family and friends, in a choice true to life, or now inside digital forum (e.g., Facebook), by having an endless barrage of ?buy my stuff? or ?come join my company and we all can get rich? messages. This type of person fluttering in the water like wounded ducks, hoping to get their grounding as they quite simply slowly sink into debt investing in their home based business when they make an effort to get some other person to sign up them.

Certainly, many of the training and systems in the world will not help if you?

3) Non-Unique, Non-Competitive, Over-Priced Products.

The lure of your Multilevel marketing business is that often, supposedly, these lenders are ?cutting out of middle-men? in marketing and shipping connected with traditional businesses, and allowing independent distributors to reap the lucrative profits.

In reality, however, the majority of bags are glorified versions of products you can get at Wal-Mart or Target or Amazon.com. The prices are inflated to yield a nice gain for the company as well as a string of marketers who all purchase a cut of your commission from each sale.

Thus your friends and relatives find spend premium price to purchase from you what exactly are (usually) only slightly improved versions of store-bought goods. That is not an audio business.

4) Their ?Business? Is usually a Scam!

Okay, is really a fourth, ?bonus? point, beyond the other three, containing being mentioned. It?s not a ?universal? statement about all MLM businesses. Most are fine, but a lot of them are built up must less as businesses and much more the same as an old-fashioned ?pyramid? scheme. Wrong with those? The government Trade Commission says:

?Steer clear of mlm marketing plans that pay commissions for recruiting new distributors. They?re actually illegal pyramid schemes. Why ispyramiding dangerous? Because plans that pay commissions for recruiting new distributors inevitably collapse when no new distributors is often recruited. And whenever plans collapses, most of the people ? except perhaps those on the top menu of your pyramid ? end up empty-handed.?
NOTE: All companies have costs, as well as mere fact of experiencing to be charged money to begin a company isn?t enough to become qualified as a pyramid scheme, and should not necessitate causing you to leery.

However, when you think about the ?pay plan? or ?compensation plan,? if a great deal of the funds comes either from dues the brand new associates pay, or from the use of the products/services of your new associates and NOT from actual sales, then you?ve probably got a dud product at best, or a pyramid scheme at worst.

Getting In the evening Hype

More or less everything being said, there are a number of businesses in existence that are at the least ?okay? as side reasons for income. And that?s exactly what the commitment of MLM or Mlm marketing is about, really.

This is a business, done privately, to generate a little more income. And it?s really the business that, if done professionally (which suggests having evaluated your service(s) to ensure that they may be in reality valid, unique, un-inflated products which are worth buying), you could make a responsible surviving in some MLM businesses.

Bots of Burden: U.S. Army Recruiting an Array of Animal-Inspired Robots to Assist Battlefield Troops [Video]

robot, combatNEW RECRUITS: Boston Dynamics is developing a number of robots to assist the military, including (clockwise, from the top left) the Sand Flea, Cheetah and RHex. Image: Images courtesy of Boston Dynamics

Three of the U.S. military's newest recruits reported for duty this week at the Army Test and Evaluation Command. These troops are different from normal soldiers in several ways?for starters, each has six feet. And they are robots designed to look and move like cockroaches. Aside from those details, the Army is hoping its new Boston Robotics RHex bots will soon join grunts in Afghanistan.

RHex furthers the U.S. military's ongoing efforts to deploy aerial drones and land robots to assist troops in the field. Weighing 13.5 kilograms, the camera-equipped RHex is designed to be carried in a backpack until it is needed to provide reconnaissance in rough terrain areas such as rocky inclines, riverbanks, mud and loose sandy soil. A fully charged robot can operate via remote control for six hours at a distance of up to 600 meters from its controller.

The key to RHex's mobility is the shape of its feet, which resemble apostrophes and swing in circles, slapping the ground to propel the bot forward (see video). The feet can also serve as paddles in water. RHex moves much like a similar, four-legged robot developed a few years ago by a team of Georgia Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, and University of Pennsylvania researchers.

The Army Rapid Equipping Force plans to deliver four RHex robots for testing in Afghanistan once safety evaluations are completed stateside. These bots could be joined shortly by nine Boston Dynamics so-called Sand Flea reconnaissance robots, expected to undergo similar tests later this year. Sand Flea is a four-wheel, five-kilogram dynamo that drives like a remote-control car on flat surfaces but can jump as high as nine meters to overcome obstacles (see video). The robot, which can pop up about 25 times on a single charge, uses gyro stabilization to stay level while airborne both to provide clear recon from its onboard camera and to ensure a smooth landing. Earlier versions of Sand Flea were developed by Sandia National Laboratories with funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the Army's Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization (JIEDDO).

Boston Dynamics has several other robots in the works for the military, including its Legged Squad Support System (LS3) and a fleet-footed newcomer called Cheetah that can run nearly 30 kilometers per hour, breaking the 21 kph land speed record for legged robots set in 1989 at the Leg Laboratory, part of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab.

Like its namesake in the animal kingdom, the mechanized Cheetah increases its stride and running speed by flexing and un-flexing its metallic spine on every step. The Cheetah is confined to a laboratory treadmill for now because it is connected to a hydraulic pump for power and tethered to a boomlike device overhead to keep it running in the center of the mill. Boston Dynamics designed the treadmill to move at speeds up to more than 80 kph?child's play for a real cheetah, which can run upward of 120 kph, faster than any other land animal.

It is too early to tell exactly when Cheetah, (or Sand Flea and RHex, for that matter) might see action alongside troops and how it will be utilized, but one idea is to use it as a robotic scout that can move swiftly through rougher terrain than today's wheeled or tracked robots.

DARPA, sponsoring Boston Dynamics's Cheetah work through its Maximum Mobility and Manipulation (M3) program, hopes to see a free-running prototype by the end of the year.

Right now Cheetah is more of a basic research project than a program with a specific mission, says Boston Dynamics founder Marc Raibert. "The emphasis is on getting fundamental results that could have broad impact in advancing robotics," he adds. "Indeed, work on the Cheetah robot has already forced us to rethink how a back works in locomotion to increase running speed, and to create better models for the measurement and exchange of momentum in legged locomotion."

Insight: New doubts about prostate-cancer vaccine Provenge

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Prostate cancer vaccine Provenge has long incited passions unlike any other cancer therapy.

Doctors who raised doubts about it received death threats. Health regulators and lawmakers faced loud protests at their offices. A physician at the American Cancer Society was so intimidated by Provenge partisans that he yanked a skeptical discussion of it from his blog.

The vitriol dissipated in April 2010, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Provenge for advanced prostate cancer, satisfying investors in manufacturer Dendreon and patients who for years had demanded it be put on the market.

But the bell on Round Two sounded when Marie Huber, a trained scientist and former hedge-fund analyst, made it her mission in the last year to analyze what she believes are deadly flaws in the studies that led to the approval of Provenge by the FDA.

She argues that the main reason Provenge seemed to extend survival - a crucial factor in the FDA's decision - was that older men in the study who did not receive Provenge died months sooner than similar patients in other studies.

She raises the possibility the "placebo" they received was actually harmful and made Provenge, known scientifically as sipuleucel-T, look better by comparison.

As Huber gains traction, most notably with a February paper in the prestigious Journal of the National Cancer Institute, she, too, is receiving threats. One post on an investors' message board last month suggested that "somebody smack her with a rubber hose." An email said "don't think you will be unscathed in this battle you waged on Provenge."

Provenge is Dendreon's only product and the company's stature with investors has waned with disappointing sales. In 2011, product revenues totaled $213.5 million, far from the $400 million Dendreon initially projected.

The company insists Huber's analysis is flawed and that Provenge has helped thousands of men with prostate cancer.

"I'm looking forward to getting this to patients around the world," said President and Chief Executive John Johnson.

FIRST CANCER VACCINE

Since it won FDA approval two years ago, Provenge has been Exhibit A for the idea that a patient's immune system can control or cure cancer. The first therapeutic cancer vaccine to reach the market, Provenge tries to engineer white blood cells, part of the immune system, to vanquish prostate cancer, which killed an estimated 33,720 men in the United States last year.

Its path to approval has all the features of a heavyweight healthcare fight - desperate patients demanding access to a promising therapy, a very expensive drug that extends life only a few months and efficacy data open to interpretation.

The FDA declined to approve the drug in 2007, when a clinical trial failed to show it slowed tumor growth. That incited protests, lawsuits and death threats against physicians on the FDA advisory panel who did not recommend approval, breaking with the 13-4 majority in favor.

"Provenge came along when we didn't have much to offer for prostate cancer," said Dr. Len Lichtenfeld of the ACS. "The advocacy community was bursting at the seams for something that worked. When you have that situation, it inflames passions and that can overtake the science."

In the pivotal trial called IMPACT, published in July 2010, but shared with the FDA months earlier, Provenge extended median survival by 4.1 months to 25.8 months from 21.7 months. That was sufficient for FDA approval. The vaccine costs $93,000 and patients also incur physician and other charges. Medicare agreed to cover Provenge last year, as have private insurers, but doctors initially balked at a long wait for reimbursement.

Huber had long been "utterly intrigued" by Provenge and its "huge promise of harnessing the immune system to battle cancer," she said in an interview.

In documents JNCI requires authors to sign, she declared no financial conflicts of interest. Neither she nor her former firm nor anyone else she is connected to stands to benefit financially from her analysis, she said.

Instead, she says she is motivated to help "vulnerable and desperate patients" - so much so that she gave up her job, salary and health insurance. Arguing that Provenge is harming these men, she called "the whole thing utterly horrific. The company got away with hiding data and doctors making $7,000 per prescription won't even engage in discussion" about whether it helps their patients.

After receiving degrees in biochemistry and bioscience enterprise from Cambridge University, Huber began working as an analyst for a hedge fund in 2007. A Thomson Reuters analysis of securities filings confirmed her former firm has not held any positions in Dendreon.

LACK OF EVIDENCE

Each dose of Provenge is custom-made. A nurse or technician withdraws white blood cells from a man's arm in a three-to-four hour procedure called leukapheresis.

The cells are shipped to a Dendreon manufacturing facility, where for two days they are incubated with a "fusion protein:" One protein that stimulates the cells' growth and maturation and another called PAP, or prostatic acid phosphatase. PAP is an antigen that studs prostate cancer cells like antennae, pieces of it sticking out of the cells' surfaces.

Dendreon says the patients' white blood cells take up the antigen and within hours their surfaces bristle with fragments of the telltale molecule. The cells are then shipped back to the physician and infused into the patient. A full treatment includes three such procedures, two weeks apart.

Back inside the body, Dendreon claims the modified cells trigger the immune system to produce T cells that kill any cell sporting the PAP antigen ? namely, prostate cancer cells.

In principle, that should eliminate the cancer, but Provenge does not shrink either the primary tumor or metastases.

Steven Rosenberg of the National Cancer Institute, a leading tumor immunologist, says that raises doubts over whether Provenge helps patients live longer, as the IMPACT trial reported.

"We have a lot of data that supports the idea that the product works the way it was designed to," said Dr. Mark Frohlich, Dendreon's chief medical officer. "We're seeing evidence of immune-system activation. The only question is whether the T cells are killing the tumor."

The FDA acknowledges that data supporting Provenge's approval did not show the drug shrank tumors, but says the overall survival benefit was enough to bring it to market. Spokeswoman Rita Chapelle, citing data submitted by Dendreon, said there is a "lack of evidence of anti-tumor activity," the reason for which "is unclear."

SUSPICIONS OVER SURVIVAL BENEFIT

Huber's analysis comes from data showing that men who received the placebo had very different survival times based on their age. Men older than 65 lived 17.3 months on placebo and 23 months with Provenge. Men younger than 65 lived 28 months after receiving placebo and 29 months after Provenge.

Other studies have shown that age generally does not affect how long a man survives with this form of prostate cancer, says Peter Iversen, a urologist and prostate-cancer surgeon at the University of Copenhagen and co-author of the paper with Huber.

Combining these findings led to the new paper's conclusion: The four-month edge in median survival from Provenge for all patients was due to longer survival among older men who got the vaccine.

"There is no efficacy in the younger patients, the primary group where you would expect it," said Huber.

Since the immune system weakens with age, an immune-based therapy should work better in younger men.

Some experts agree.

"If it was really a vaccine, you'd think younger men would show more response, since they are more immunocompetent," said NCI's Rosenberg.

On that basis, Huber and her co-authors, including two prostate-cancer specialists, argue the placebo used in the trial may have harmed the older men, cutting months off their lives and inadvertently making Provenge seem beneficial.

One way that could have occurred was through leukapheresis. That process removed about 90 percent of certain kinds of circulating white blood cells, according to calculations by immunologist Laura Haynes of the Trudeau Institute, a co-author of the JNCI paper.

The Provenge men got back about 32 percent of those cells, which had been stored at body temperature. The placebo men got back 12 percent, which had been incubated at near-freezing temperatures. Cold storage has been reported to kill "most, if not all, of those cells," notes the JNCI paper. Moreover, said Haynes, "if you return dead and dying cells to older men you are likely to cause inflammation," which can stoke the growth of cancerous cells.

Younger men were better able to replace the lost white blood cells, argued Iversen. Older men could not, resulting in early death.

"These cells are very specialized and there is research suggesting that removing them can harm older men," he said.

Earlier this month, DynaMed, an online database used by physicians, added to its Provenge entry a note on the JNCI paper, but calls the concern "not substantiated." ACS's Lichtenfeld says the analysis "might inhibit some patients and doctors from going ahead with a very expensive drug."

Huber says she plans to approach European regulators as they consider Dendreon's application to approve Provenge.

Investor message boards have lit up in response to the new paper. In February, an anonymous commentator on InvestorVillage.com warned that Huber's work was about to be published "a few days before our earnings. Her agenda is obvious."

IFFY STATISTICS

Critics of the new analysis argue the number of cells removed is too small to suppress the immune system. Charles Drake, an oncologist and immunologist at Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, said there is no evidence the placebo men in IMPACT suffered more infections or other effects of a depleted immune system than the Provenge men.

The scientist who led IMPACT, oncologist Philip Kantoff of Dana Farber Cancer Center, said colleagues in immunology "dismissed as nonsense the idea that leukapheresis could hurt individuals."

He takes issue, too, with the statistics. Dividing the men by whether they are older or younger than 65, he said, is "arbitrary" and to pick apart data retrospectively is a statistical no-no.

Dendreon's Frohlich also criticizes the statistics: "If you do enough of these (post-hoc analyses) then by chance alone you'd expect to get one positive finding."

In other words, it is almost always possible to find a subset of patients who do better than others.

When Dendreon divided the men by whether they were older or younger than about 71, he added, they found no red flags.

The FDA agrees that such post-hoc statistical analyses "are exploratory" and their results "must be interpreted with caution, as acknowledged by the authors." Yet a paid consultant to Dendreon before the IMPACT trial agreed with many of Huber's concerns.

"The control vaccine used in IMPACT and in the predecessor trial had never been used anywhere for anything and may well have been detrimental to patients," said Donald Berry of MD Anderson Cancer Center, a leading biostatistician. "Here's a great way to get your drug approved: Kill the control patients."

Despite the heated rhetoric, Provenge may go out with a whimper more than a bang. Promising new agents for advanced prostate cancer include an oral drug from Medivation Inc called enzalutamide, in the final phase of clinical trials, and Zytiga from Johnson & Johnson, which won FDA approval in 2011. A vaccine that targets PSA, from Bavarian Nordic Immunotherapy, is in late-stage trials.

Dendreon does not disclose how many patients have been prescribed Provenge. CEO Johnson said that about 70 percent of its Provenge revenue comes from sales to community hospitals and doctors and 30 percent from academic medical centers. Some of the latter decline to use Provenge, deterred by lingering concerns over whether it provides a meaningful benefit.

Three such facilities in the Midwest, contacted at random by Reuters, confirmed they do not recommend Provenge. All asked not to be named for fear of receiving threats.

"It is my policy not to make public comments about this drug," said one oncologist. Patients who ask for it "are referred to another facility."

Real estate market Investing can certainly be a Success at ...

People spend money on real estate for any number of reasons. There are those who assume that property is a lot more stable than gold being an investment, with regards to price and security. They contend that just as real property such as land is immovable, it can?t be stolen. Regardless of whether infrastructure and improvements into it maybe a house depreciate with time, the land itself isn?t going to, but consistently appreciates, under normal conditions. Gold-oriented investors, on the other hand, defend their yellow metal to get more stable becasue it is value consistently appreciates and accepted worldwide. Further, you can use them as paper currency benchmarks and to protect borrowing, secured as gold reserves in coins and/or bullions, thus many are interested in gold investment. That creates gold more acceptable as legal tender than land.

It?s easy to say this today ? but stocks in the last A decade are actually a hopeless investment. Should you put your money in stocks in 2002, you should definitely have less money today. It?s played havoc with everybody?s retirement. If it weren?t for the way stocks have acted within the last decade, utilize hear constantly about how exactly people have were required to placed their retirement off by 10 or 15 years. You?d believe that individuals who aim to spread their risks by putting some of their faith in actual estate investing could well be saved.

But that hasn?t happened we all know. Property prices have plummeted within the last a few years,. Well, perhaps it would not be fair to talk about that all real estate property listing has tanked. For those who could spend money on investor trusts and never in a home directly, you might generate income it. People that have complied scene recent times elapse increasingly well.

Put your money in US real estate investment trusts, therefore you might find that you make 3 times all the off your investment than you should in case you bought S&P 500 stocks. Not really that this really is any great secret. Investors happen to be falling over themselves to purchase this kind of real estate. A lot more than $20 billion are committed to do you think you?re a shares each year to date.

For anybody who?s interested, all is here niche offerings currently. You will find investments that deal exclusively with real-estate developments regarding the mobile operators as an illustration. Others will still only manage real estate investing in campus housing. You will find an array of nations ? office buildings, apartment complexes and so on.

While using economy tentatively start to check out somewhat, market starts to brighten up. Naturally, you are unable to just jump in headfirst without really understanding what?s going on. For instance, when Greece?s economy went in to a tailspin, American REIT?s fell 5%. And after that, together with the Fed increasing mortgage rates, real estate investment loans could become unaffordable to several. That is the worrying thing.

Having said that, besides these risks around, REITs have over a period of time, were outperform anything else ? regardless of what way the eye rates go. The advantage of paying for real estate investment is always that occurs match inflation. When inflation rises, rents rise too. They usually rise for a faster clip than inflation.

Health care Supreme Court hearings: Skeptical questions cast doubt ...

Sharp questioning by the Supreme Court's conservative justices has cast serious doubt on the survival of the individual insurance requirement at the heart of President Barack Obama's historic health care overhaul.

Arguments at the high court Tuesday focused on whether the insurance requirement "is a step beyond what our cases allow," in the words of Justice Anthony Kennedy.

He and Chief Justice John Roberts are emerging as the seemingly pivotal votes.

Kennedy told Solicitor General Donald Verrilli that he faced a heavy burden to justify why it was necessary to require Americans to ?go into commerce? by purchasing health insurance.

Justices Antonin Scalia and Samuel Alito appeared likely to join with Justice Clarence Thomas to vote to strike down the key provision. The four Democratic appointees seemed ready to vote to uphold it.

Scalia said the mandate may be necessary, but not proper, because the federal government is supposed to have limited powers.

"If the government can do this, what else can it not do?" he asked.

There was a lot of talk about healthy young people subsidizing the health care costs of others. Justice Elena Kagan suggested they are also beneficiaries.

"The subsidizers eventually become the subsidized," she said.

Oral arguments conclude on Wednesday.

AJC Spring 2012 Dining Guide | Food and More with John Kessler

(Our interactive map makes it easy to find an ?Atlanta 50? restaurant near you.)

The last time I summoned the sheer chutzpah to propose a list of metro Atlanta?s top 50 restaurants, the year was 2004. Back then many of the best restaurants were also the most ambitious ones. Scouting out the talented chefs who used top-tier ingredients meant going to a lot of places with tablecloths and ice-filled wine buckets.

That hierarchy has collapsed, and I have to say it makes this quest a lot more rewarding. Today you can eat great food in scores of casual joints, in bars where you shout over head-banger music, in revitalized neighborhoods throughout the metro area, in farmers markets and at food truck rallies.

Review by John Kessler

John Kessler is the chief dining critic for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

All across Atlanta, I have witnessed the doctrine of manifest yumminess.

So how do you choose 50 from this bounty?

You eat and eat, and eat some more. But first you must decide what doesn?t belong.

I chose to stay away from restaurants outside the metro area (sorry, Athens) and restaurants that only serve late at night (like Octopus Bar) or on weekends (Quinones at Bacchanalia).

I avoided some very good places that suffer from inconsistency and others that are too similar to better spots nearby. I tried as best as I could to provide a variety of styles and cuisines.

I?m still looking for a French, Thai or Middle Eastern spot to merit a place on this list. I?m sorry to the worthy Italian and Japanese restaurants that were edged out.

I did not limit it to only those places that we?ve rated three stars and above but instead made room for two-star restaurants ? such as Roswell?s Table & Main and Lilburn?s Three Blind Mice ? that add so much to their communities and connect so well with their fans. It?s not an ITP or an OTP thing, it?s a looking-like-Atlanta thing.

Some restaurants that I had not previously rated, but have visited at least twice, now get a rating.

Two previously rated places got a bump. Atlanta?s Heirloom Market BBQ deserves three stars as a citywide destination for its inimitable fusion barbecue. Miller Union has grown into a defining restaurant for today?s Atlanta and it deserves a fourth star. (A guide to our star ratings and a list of the restaurants we?ve rated.)

No restaurant on this list lost a star. Yay!

I hope you enjoy this list and can use it as a guide when you travel throughout metro Atlanta. As you can see, there?s lots to explore.

Woman busted after bragging about avoiding jury duty

A 57-year-old Denver woman has been charged with two felonies after admitting on a local radio show that she pretended to have a mental disorder to escape jury duty. KUSA-TV's Will Ripley reports.

By msnbc.com staff

A Denver woman has been charged with perjury after telling a radio show that she dressed up in a weird way to avoid jury duty. It turns out the judge who was presiding over the case from which she was dismissed was listening just as she confessed, and he was quick to take legal action.

Susan Cole, 57, is also charged with attempting to influence a public officer, i.e. the judge, by dressing up, as she put it, in a "disheveled and uncoordinated fashion" to look like she had a mental disorder, NBC affiliate KUSA-TV reported.?

She also claimed to suffer from PTSD.

"I broke out of domestic violence in the military. And I have a lot of repercussions. One is post-traumatic stress disorder ... My military records are now missing. I have lived on the street, and I have worked myself up to living with my cousin," the court reporter recorded during the interview portion of the court case.

Cole had?called into a radio station to explain how she got out of jury duty last year.

KUSA legal analyst Scott Robinson said Cole's on-air confession will make defending her a challenge.

"The defense will have to show that she did not knowingly lie about a material fact," he said. "Bragging about getting out of jury duty is a little bit like being proud of not voting or cheating on your taxes."

No court date for Cole's appearance was provided.

Global sea level likely to rise as much as 70 feet for future generations

ScienceDaily (Mar. 19, 2012) ? Even if humankind manages to limit global warming to 2 degrees C (3.6 degrees F), as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recommends, future generations will have to deal with sea levels 12 to 22 meters (40 to 70 feet) higher than at present, according to research published in the journal Geology.

The researchers, led by Kenneth G. Miller, professor of earth and planetary sciences in the School of Arts and Sciences at Rutgers University, reached their conclusion by studying rock and soil cores in Virginia, Eniwetok Atoll in the Pacific and New Zealand. They looked at the late Pliocene epoch, 2.7 million to 3.2 million years ago, the last time the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere was at its current level, and atmospheric temperatures were 2 degrees C higher than they are now.

"The difference in water volume released is the equivalent of melting the entire Greenland and West Antarctic Ice Sheets, as well as some of the marine margin of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet," said H. Richard Lane, program director of the National Science Foundation's Division of Earth Sciences, which funded the work. "Such a rise of the modern oceans would swamp the world's coasts and affect as much as 70 percent of the world's population."

"You don't need to sell your beach real estate yet, because melting of these large ice sheets will take from centuries to a few thousand years," Miller said. "The current trajectory for the 21st century global rise of sea level is 2 to 3 feet (0.8 to1 meter) due to warming of the oceans, partial melting of mountain glaciers, and partial melting of Greenland and Antarctica."

Miller said, however, that this research highlights the sensitivity of Earth's great ice sheets to temperature change, suggesting that even a modest rise in temperature results in a large sea-level rise. "The natural state of the Earth with present carbon dioxide levels is one with sea levels about 20 meters higher than at present," he said.

Miller was joined in the research by Rutgers colleagues James G. Wright, associate professor of earth and planetary sciences; James V. Browning, assistant research professor of earth and planetary sciences; Yair Rosenthal, professor of marine science in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences; Sindia Sosdian, research scientist in marine science and a postdoctoral scholar at Cardiff University in Wales; and Andrew Kulpecz, a Rutgers doctoral student when the work was done, now with Chevron Corp. Other co-authors were Michelle Kominz, professor of geophysics and basin dynamics at Western Michigan University; Tim R. Naish, director of the Antarctic Research Center at Victoria University of Wellington, in New Zealand; Benjamin S. Cramer of Theiss Research in Eugene, Ore.; and W. Richard Peltier, professor of physics and director of the Center for Global Change Science at the University of Toronto.

(AP Photo/Eric Risberg, File)

(AP) ? Embattled San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi faces sentencing for false imprisonment in a closely watched domestic violence case involving his Venezuelan actress wife, in a dramatic saga that has gripped his city for nearly three months.

The sentencing Monday for the misdemeanor comes a week after he pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal with prosecutors to likely avoid embarrassing testimony and jurors possibly seeing a video of his wife, Eliana Lopez, tearfully discussing the alleged incident during a trial.

However, District Attorney George Gascon has expressed concern that he's not convinced Mirkarimi really believes he is guilty of the crime.

Under the agreement, Mirkarimi will pay a $400 fine, receive three years of probation, a mandatory year in a domestic violence intervention program, community service and counseling.

He was initially charged with misdemeanor domestic violence battery, child endangerment and dissuading a witness. He could have faced a year in prison if convicted of those charges.

"For the last two months, this case has caused my family, my department ?the Sheriff's Department ? and this city, great turmoil, pain and disappointment," Mirkarimi told reporters last week. "This plea allows us to move forward.

"As I have, and I intend to return to the business of running one of the finest sheriff's departments in the nation, of mending my family and raising my son, Theo, in a safe and happy home."

But Gascon told the San Francisco Chronicle's editorial board late last week that statements Mirkarimi has made to reporters about his mounting legal bills ? $125,000 and counting ? along with intense media coverage had been taking a toll on his family and was a considerable factor to take the plea deal.

Mirkarimi originally asked for a speedy trial.

"There is a guilty plea here, and I know there's almost an attempt to deny that this has occurred: 'I didn't really do this.' 'I'm being forced to do this.' That's very concerning to me, to be very honest with you," Gascon told the newspaper.

Mirkarimi's attorney, Lidia Stiglich, said her client has unconditionally accepted responsibility for the incident.

Prosecutors say Mirkarimi, 50, bruised the arm of Lopez, 36, during an argument in front of their toddler son at their San Francisco home on New Year's Eve.

The next day, Lopez told her neighbor, Ivory Madision, who recorded a video in which Lopez, a former telenovela star, tearfully describes the alleged incident and a bruise on her right bicep.

Lopez's lawyers argued to no avail that the video should be withdrawn as evidence because she thought Madison was a lawyer and it was made under the assumption of attorney-client privilege. Madison graduated from law school, but is not a licensed attorney.

Anti-domestic violence advocates are calling for Mayor Ed Lee and the board of supervisors to remove Mirkarimi, a former supervisor, from office.

"This is a national embarrassment," Kathy Black, executive director of the nonprofit La Casa de las Madres, said about Mirkarimi. "I don't see how he can 'move forward' without first taking real responsibility."

Anyone that needs to have their vision corrected can opt for contact lenses ? these will work just as well as regular glasses. Always consider how comfortable your eyes feel when you are wearing contact lenses. Your vision should also greatly improve. You also may have to do some comparison shopping to find the best prices. If contact lenses are going to be a regular part of your life, you might as well find ones that are perfect for you.
