Rangers' Josh Hamilton joins select club with 4-homer game vs. Orioles (+video)

The Texas Rangers outfielder drove in eight runs with four swings of the bat Tuesday night.

Not even Babe Ruth was able to do what Josh Hamilton of the Rangers did Tuesday night against the Orioles in Baltimore - hit four home runs in a single game - as Texas beat the O's, 10-3.

Hamilton hit three of the blasts to center field and one to left off three different Oriole pitchers at Camden Yards. All the home runs were two-run shots. He ended up going five-for-five at the plate, adding a fifth-inning double.

The Rangers center fielder enjoyed how his teammates reacted as much as hitting the home runs, ESPN.com reported.

"I was saying after I hit two that I had never hit three in a game before. What a blessing that was," Hamilton said. "And then to hit four, it was just an awesome feeling to see how excited my teammates got.

"It reminds you of when you're in Little League and a little kid, and just the excitement and why we play the game. Things like that. You never know what can happen. It was just an absolute blessing."

The 'Big League Stew' Yahoo! Sports blog points out that Hamilton is the 16th major leaguer to accomplish the feat. Hamilton joins such greats as Lou Gehrig, Willie Mays, and Mike Schmidt in the select four-homer game club.

Afterwards, Hamilton, a early AL M.V.P. candidate, put his career night in perspective, according to MLB.com.

"Obviously, other than the World Series, it's the highlight of my big league career," Hamilton said.

Hamilton leads the major leagues in hitting with a .406 average, 14 home runs and 36 RBIs. The Rangers currently lead the American League West Division with a 20-10 record.

Disrupting Media: Where Do We Go Now That We?ve Won? With Henry Blodget, Jonah Peretti And Gabe Rivera

Screen Shot 2012-05-10 at 4.44.52 PMIn a world where Instagram is worth more than the New York Times, old media is no longer dying, it's dead. Instead, in its wake, we've got the Wild West: A chaotic morass of never-ending slideshows, puny WordPress blogs breaking big time news (and selling for tens of millions) and the merger of lolcats and politics on a site which focuses just as much on content sharing as content. Although we all agree that new media is just media now, there are many perspectives battling it out for the future of the medium and whatever form it will take -- Aggregation vs. Original content, etc, etc and so on and so forth -- "The medium is the message" is at its most poignant in online media.

Give Mom an unforgettable Mother's Day gift | TheCatholicSpirit.com

Mother?s Day has in many ways fallen victim to our commercialized culture in the same way other holidays have.

The day has become a ?Hallmark heaven? of sorts. It ranks third in seasonal greeting card sales behind only Christmas and Valentine?s Day (133 million Mother?s Day cards will be delivered this year). And then there?s the flowers and candy: Mother?s Day accounts for one-fourth of holiday floral purchases and the sale of countless boxes of chocolate.

Anna Jarvis, the founder of the U.S. version of Mother?s Day back in 1914, criticized such commercialization and led a campaign against it.

Needless to say, she didn?t win.

Of course, there?s nothing wrong with giving Mom flowers or candy on her special day if it brings a smile to her face. But there?s a gift that does a better job of honoring the spirit of the holiday, and it hearkens back to an important lesson your mom surely taught you when you were growing up: Don?t forget to say, ?Thank you.?

Maybe it?s been a while since you said those words to your mom.

Maybe you haven?t said them enough.

Or maybe, taking a few too many things for granted, you haven?t said them at all.

From the heart

Mother?s Day is a good time to make an extra effort to say thank you for all she?s done to make you the person you are today.

Maybe you could do it during a dinner outing or an unhurried telephone conversation or ? if it might take you a little time to find the right words ? by writing and ?snail-mailing? an old-fashioned letter with words from your heart instead of from a professional greeting card writer.

Motherhood, after all, in some ways can be a thankless job. It doesn?t matter if Mom stays home to help raise a family or works outside the home for the benefit of the family income, motherhood requires hard work, sacrifice, a lot of prayer and unconditional love even in those times when her children aren?t acting so lovable.

Too often, we kids don?t appreciate the challenges of parenthood until we?re older or we?re parents ourselves.

So, if a long-overdue thank you is in order for your mom, consider skipping the gift shop this year. Pay her a visit instead, give her a call when you both have time to talk or write that letter. You?ll be honoring the real spirit of Mother?s Day, and I guarantee it will be a gift she?ll never forget.

HTC EVO 4G LTE for Sprint review

Image

HTC is on a roll in the US, first releasing the One S for T-Mobile and the One X for AT&T. Now, with the EVO 4G LTE on Sprint, it's ready to shift to the CDMA realm in a different costume. Internally, it's incredibly close to what's offered in the One series' flagship, but the Now Network has made a few tweaks to the device so it'll adjust to life as the latest smartphone in the fabled EVO lineup. This time it's packing a powerful processor, gorgeous display and the ability to connect to the still-dormant LTE. It's eager to show its face in retail stores beginning May 18th for $200, placing it in the high end of Sprint's selection.

This review, however, is just a bit different from any we've done before. How so? To our knowledge, we've never done one in New Orleans before. But when a phone gets dropped in our lap at CTIA 2012, we're naturally going to put it through its paces, regardless of location. As it shares so many commonalities with its One brethren, we've been expecting a very similar fit, feel and performance. In our review, we'll take you through what's different and what's better or worse. Is this the best device to grace the hands of Sprint customers? Follow us past the break to find out.

Macy's 1Q earnings jump 38 percent

NEW YORK (AP) ? Macy's Inc. reported a 38 percent increase in its first-quarter profit as the department store chain continues to reap benefits from its move to tailor its fashions to local markets.

The results disclosed Wednesday beat Wall Street's expectations. But its shares fell more than 4 percent in premarket trading as Macy's failed to boost its earnings guidance.

Investors were hoping that the chain would benefit from key rival J.C. Penney's move to a new price strategy that will take time to resonate with shoppers.

Macy's, which also operates the upscale Bloomingdale's chain, said Wednesday that its net income rose to $181 million, or 43 cents per share, for the three-month period ended April 28. That's up from $131 million, or 30 cents per share, a year ago.

Revenue rose 4.3 percent to $6.14 billion from $5.89 billion a year ago.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet had expected earnings of 40 cents per share on revenue of $6.14 billion.

"The momentum in our business at Macy's and Bloomingdale's continued to build in the first quarter, with sales and earnings exceeding our expectations going into the year," Terry J. Lundgren, Macy's chairman, president and CEO, said in a statement. "The quarterly data clearly demonstrates the strength of our results as we continue to implement our strategies."

Macy's is the first in a series of major retailers reporting first-quarter results that should offer clues into consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of U.S. economic activity.

A flurry of economic data has sparked worries over a spring slowdown for the third year in a row. Companies have slowed their hiring in March and April. The stock market has lost momentum as the European debt crisis accelerates. And housing remains weak. April's retail sales report also showed a pullback from shoppers but warm weather and an early Easter helped to pull sales forward. Analysts believe that May results will offer more clarity on the consumers' mindset.

Macy's has been able to deftly navigate is way through the recession and a slow recovery by embracing its own initiatives. The chain has benefited from the strategy Lundgren conceived to localize merchandise to regional markets as consumer spending slowed down in 2007. A better trained sales force also helped. Such strategies have helped to outperform its peers.

Revenue at stores open at least a year climbed 4.4 percent for the quarter. That compares with rival Kohl's, which posted a meager 0.2 percent increase. J.C. Penney is expected to post a decline for that measure as it is in the middle of implementing an overhaul in a new pricing strategy, launched Feb. 1. The pricing strategy focuses on everyday prices and deeper promotions that last an entire month.

Still, Macy's only slightly increased its annual guidance for revenue at stores open at least a year. It now expects that figure to be up 3.7 percent, compared with its earlier guidance of 3.5 percent.

Macy's reaffirmed its earnings guidance for the year of $3.25 to $3.30 per share. Analysts had expected $3.39 per share, according to FactSet.

Macy's shares fell $1.73, or 4.4 percent, to $37.78 in trading 30 minutes before the opening bell.
