Obama spends his 51st birthday on the golf course

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama celebrated his 51st birthday on Saturday with a round of golf, then helicoptered to the Camp David presidential retreat for a quiet evening off the campaign trail.

Obama, an avid golfer, played with colleagues and friends at the Andrews Air Force Base in hot, muggy weather conditions before taking Marine One to Maryland's Catoctin Mountains in the afternoon.

The White House did not release details of the president's evening plans or share the menu for the birthday meal he was expected to share with wife, Michelle.

Their daughters were at summer camp this week and it was not clear whether they would be present at the rustic getaway that the Obamas have visited less than past White House residents. The president often opts to golf at Andrews or play basketball in downtown Washington to unwind on the weekends.

Obama is set to visit Connecticut and Colorado for campaign events next week, and will host a re-election fundraiser with a birthday theme at his family home in Chicago next weekend.

Vice President Joe Biden said in a campaign email last month that supporters donating $5 or more would be entered into a raffle for a chance to attend that event at the Obama residence.

"Take it from me. You'll have fun at this one," Biden wrote.

Michael begins with a comparison to environmentalism: Stewardship of valuable resources, and long-term planning. There are cognitive challenges, and issues in providing institutional incentives. (He recommends sucking in as much data as possible, and worrying about adding the metadata later, perhaps through crowdsourcing.)

Michael notes that copyright used to be an opt-in and opt-out system; you had to register, and deposit a copy. Then you had to publish with a ?; anything published before 1989 that doesn?t have the ? is in the public domain. You had to renew after 28 years, and the majority of copyrights (60%) were not renewed. We therefore had a growing public domain.

The court in Golan upheld Congress? right to restore copyright for works published outside the US. This puts the public domain at risk, he says. He also points to the Hathi case in which they?ve been sued for decisions they made about orphan works. There is a dangerous argument being made there that if archiving occurs within the library space, fair use goes away. The legal environment is thus unstable.

Now that copyright is automatic and lasts for 70 years after the author?s death, managing the rights in order to preserve the content is fraught with difficulty.

He reminds us that making a copy to preserve the work is unlikely to have market harm to the copyright owner, and thus ought to be legal under fair use, Michael says. ?You ought to have a bias toward believing you have a Fair Use right to preserve things.?

He asks: ?Can the preservation community organize itself to be the voice of tomorrow?s users on issues of copyright policy and copyright estate planning?? For orphan works, copyright term shortening, exceptions to DRM rules, good practices open licensing in the long term?

And he asks: How can you get the FBs and Googles et al. to support long-term preservation? Michael suggests marking things that already in the public domain as being in the public domain. Otherwise, the public domain is invisible. And think about ?springing? licenses, e.g. an open license that only goes into effect after a set time or under a particular circumstance.

How to Not Worry About What Others Think ... - Self Improvement Tips

See this guy on the left? He definitely does not worry about what others think of him.

For the longest time, I felt as if I had to please everybody. This was a dear mistake?it is impossible to keep everyone satisfied.? I ended up being unsatisfied myself, and for what reason would I place my happiness before others? For years I could never understand why I let other come before myself. Trustfully, it was fear I admit.

We all have our reasons for worrying about what others think of us, but most of it comes from fear of something.

Are you afraid of people not liking you for who you are? Have this fear prevented you from doing something that you wanted to do, all because you were afraid of criticisms?

It?s okay to acknowledge this. After all, you can only fix something if you know that it?s a problem. And I don?t mean fixing whatever unfavorable attribute others may not like about you.

In fact, for those who do like you for who you are, here is something to ponder upon.

Fact 1:

Statistic shows that when you pass away, an average total of 70% of the people you already knew (friends and families) will show up to your funeral. Depending on the weather, it will play a huge factor as well.

Statistics have shown that when there is an unfavorable weather condition (rain, snow, hail), only 50% of those who were planning to come will decide to stay home at the last minute?all because of a weather.

It is also proven that 0% will come when there is a snowstorm or hurricane. This is because the obituary is closed. Not even they themselves would want to open this kind of life respecting silence one last time to you.

How much realization does that put into prospect about those that do like you, and those that do not? Simple answer: most people are too busy to care about you 99.99% of the time. The other .01% applies when you do something significantly good or bad.

Whether you want every single person to like or accept you for who you are, this is impossible. Even the most likable and lovable people have someone who do not like and love them.

Fact 2:

You and I are being judge at this very moment. I know it and now you know it.

I can already sense some readers saying how awful this article is. Not all of my posts are grade A+ writing quality. Maybe not a B either for some of them. Actually, I am starting to even wonder if any of my articles are worth reading? Oh well.

I can also assure you that I most likely have English professors who look down upon my writing techniques. But (there I go, using ?but? after a period?points deducted) how many actually would stress about it after a minute later? Maybe a minute is too soon, but how about a day after?

I?m willing to bet that most people who either grade, judge, critique or make opinions on anything will soon forget that they were once in the presence of doing so.

No one makes a judgment and starts to daydream about it the whole day. Doing so is uncannily inhuman and those people?s thought should not affect you.

Rather, it is the quality of those who care for you. These people should be the ones that matters the most. These people are probably in the 35% group that will come to your funeral while it is raining, snowing, or hailing. Pay your respect to them now by focusing more of your attention to them. They already have a good judgment of you, so focus your mind on that positive vibe.

With this in mind, it all comes down to how much you respect yourself. I may take a chance here and say that if you have read this far down, then you must have a want for changing your own outlook just as bad as I did.

This is the first step towards self improvement. The first thing to ask yourself is:

What do I want?

For the first time, it is all about you. What is it that you feel like doing? Remember that it is okay to be or do something different than what everybody else is doing. Anyone who does not approve of this does not matter to you.

In fact, at this point, what you do will be irrelevant to those who do not have your approval. It is those that do approve are those that are relevant.

You will always have people judging you. In order to do want you want to do, you must not base your action on what others think.

Although this may sound ironic, make responsible choices while doing what you want.

What is Stopping You?

There isn?t a physical force preventing you from doing what you want to do. Or at least I hope not, but that can always be gotten around too.

The only thing that is stopping you is a mental force. Something that can?t even be seen or felt by. It just goes to show you how much power a non-existence force has upon us.

But you also have one to fight back. It is your mind. (another points deducted for using ?but? in the first sentence)

Your mind is like a muscle. The more you train it, the bigger and more strength it gets. You train your mind the same way, minus the weight lifting part. Negative imaginations will be equivalent to the weights that needs lifting.

When you start thinking of doubts, you need to counteract it by thinking ?of course they will like it? or ?it will be the best thing?. It?s not a matter of them liking it or not, it?s the fact that you do not have this mental force stopping your physical actions.

Having positive affirmations is what allows you to do things that you want.

As powerful as your mental mind may be, it will not be influential enough to change everyone?s opinion.

If you feel as if you are important to do things on your own term, then you will stop allowing others to control your ways of doing. It?s that simple. Do what you like and stand up for what you believe in. It makes people respect you even more.

With these advice applied, I was able to begin living life on my own terms. It makes me stand out, feel better, and overall carefree?in a good way. Whether an English professor gives me a C or an F for my articles, I just don?t care. And neither should you (yes, I purposely started with an ?and?).

Hypoxic lung environment increases HIF-2a tumor growth signaling

In addition to the well-known risk factor of smoking, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) increases lung cancer risk.

A University of Colorado Cancer Center study published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research details one novel mechanism of this risk: long-term oxygen depletion stimulates signals that promote tumor growth. In addition, this early study performed in animal models shows that tumors fueled by these COPD-induced signals may be especially susceptible to prevention or perhaps even treatment with drugs that turn off these same signals, namely VEGFR-2 and EGFR inhibitors.

"At least in animal models, this study shows an important pathway activated in lung tumors arising in poorly oxygenated regions of the lung that isn't activated to nearly the same degree in other lung cancers," says York Miller, MD, investigator at the CU Cancer Center and professor in the Department of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Denver Veterans Affairs Medical Center, the paper's senior author.

"There are probably other mechanisms driving lung cancer in COPD as well for example, inflammation is also very likely playing in but this paper shows that the hypoxic sensing pathway is specifically activated in these COPD lung cancer models and that this sensing pathway is to a large degree driving tumor growth," Miller says.

Specifically, his study used animal models designed to develop cancer, which the group placed in high altitude chambers set to mimic the chronic oxygen depletion of found in parts of the lung affected by COPD. Mice in the hypoxic condition developed larger tumors than mice given normal oxygen, but, according to Miller, what was especially striking is the reason for this tumor growth.

"We saw that tumor growth in the hypoxic environment which mimics that of COPD conditions including chronic bronchitis and emphysema is due to signaling by HIF-2a. This HIF-2a in turn activates cancer growth promoting mechanisms including VEGF and the EGFR ligand, TGFa, which are growth factors involved in stimulating cell proliferation and the development of new blood vessels," Miller says.

Likewise, just as tumors that arise in hypoxic conditions do so through turning on pathways that lead to the over-production of VEGF and TGFa, so too are these tumors especially susceptible to cancer therapies that block these growth factors. Sure enough, animal models given the drug vandetanib a combined VEGFR/EGFR inhibitor failed to develop cancer under hypoxic conditions.

"Chemoprevention hasn't been done successfully for lung cancer," Miller says, "but this approach of VEGF/EGFR inhibitors for patients with COPD and extreme lung cancer risk may be something that should be explored further."

Miller imagines the next step is a review of patient records to discover if COPD lung cancer patients who happened to be treated with VEGF/EGFR inhibitors, in fact, had better tumor response than patients with normal lung function and similar tumors.

"Right now it's not a treatment," Miller says, "but it's an exciting line of inquiry."

After much internal debate General Motors has apparently agreed to give Cadillac the resources it needs to give serious chase to its European competitors, notably by approving a new 7-Series competitor that will serve as the domestic maker?s flagship sedan.

As TheDetroitBureau.com recently reported, the new model ? which will be heavily influenced by the recent Cadillac Ciel Concept ? will be joined by a wide range of additional new Caddy products, including a downsized crossover and a V-Series version of the new ATS entry-luxury sedan.

The new model will also cap Cadillac?s push to finally become a truly global brand.? Though insiders tell TheDetroitBureau.com the Ciel-based flagship is likely to develop particularly strong demand in China, Caddy also hopes that it can provide a halo in Europe, where the brand has long struggled for traction.

The Bureau has been told that a concept version of the new premium luxury model could appear as early as next January?s Detroit Auto Show.

While dancing with Wayne, Catwoman whispers in his ear, "There's a storm coming, Mr. Wayne. You and your friends better batten down the hatches. 'Cause when it hits, you and your friends are gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us."

Earlier, Limbaugh had said that the fact that the movie's villain was named Bane was somehow tied to the fact that Romney once headed up financial services firm Bain Capital. Bane the villain was introduced in comic books in 1993, before Romney was nationally known.

On Wednesday, Limbaugh said that he had received more?reaction?to his?Bane/Bain comments than on anything he's said on-air before, including his controversial comments about Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke. Limbaugh called Fluke a "slut" for testifying about insurance coverage of contraception. President Barack Obama later called Fluke?with words of?support.

"More people are concerned about whatever I might have said or didn't say about a Batman villain than they are about their own jobs," Limbaugh said, according to the Daily News.

"Dark Knight Rises" director Christopher Nolan called Limbaugh's Bain/Bane comments "peculiar," and Bane co-creator Doug Moench told the Daily News that "None of us thought about Mitt Romney or Bain Capital, trust me," he said. "It was 20 years ago, for Pete's sake."

The complete results of the Prostate Cancer Intervention versus Observation Trial (PIVOT) study have (finally) just been published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Unfortunately, only the abstract is available on line so it may take us a little while to get hold of a copy of the complete report.

For those who may have forgotten (or simply not been aware of this study), this was a long-term study of the relative benefits (and risks) of radical prostatectomy to simple ?observation? (effectively a watchfukl waiting strategy as opposed to an active surveillance strategy) in men initially diagnosed with localized prostate cancer.

According to the abstract (and as previously reported):

• The trial enrolled 731 men with localized prostate cancer between November 1994?and January 2002.
• These 731 men were randomly assigned to either be treated with a radical prostatectomy (RP) or were simply ?observed.?
• All patients were followed until January 2010.
• The primary study outcome was all-cause mortality.
• The secondary study outcome was prostate cancer-specific mortality.

The core results of the study are as follows:

• Average (mean) age of the patients at enrollment was?67 years.
• Average (median) PSA level of the patients at enrollment was 7.8 ng/ml.
• Average (median) follow-up was 10.0 years.
• During the follow-up period
  • 171/364 patients (47.0 percent) randomized to?RP died.
  • 183/367 patients (49.9 percent) radomized to observation also died.
  • The absolute reduction in risk of death as a consequence of RP as opposed to observation was 2.9 percent (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.88).
  • 21/364 patients (5.8 percent) randomized to RP died either from their prostate cancer or as a direct consequence of their treatment.
  • 31/367 patients (8.4 percent) randomized to RP died from prostate cancer.
  • The absolute reduction in risk of death as a consequence of RP as opposed to observatiuon was 2.6 percent (HR = 0.63).
• Adverse events after surgery occurred within 30 days in 21.4 percent?of patients treated by RP, inclusive of?one death.
• Among men with a baseline PSA > 10 ng/ml, RP was associated with?a statistically significant ?reduction in risk for all-cause mortality.
• Among?men with intermediate-risk or high-risk prostate cancer there appears to have been the possibility of a statistically signifciant reduction in risk for all-cause mortality.
• There was no?impact of treatment on all-cause and prostate-cancer mortality according to age, race, coexisting conditions, self-reported performance status, or histologic features of the tumor.

The authors conclude with the careful statement that:

Among men with localized prostate cancer detected during the early era of PSA testing, radical prostatectomy did not significantly reduce all-cause or prostate-cancer mortality, as compared with observation, through at least 12 years of follow-up.

There appear to be no important differences in the final abstract of this paper as compared to data originally reported by Wilt at the annual meeting of the American Urological Association in May 2011, which only makes it more surprising that it has taken so long for this report to be published.

We will reserve further comment on this paper until we have had the chance to read the entire text of the article, as well as the entire text of the associated editorial by Thompson and Tangen entitled ?Prostate cancer ? uncertainty and a way forward.? Crime Blog: Local family pleads for help solving murder of former Aggie football player

HOUSTON ? A local family is hoping the public can help solve the murder of a 26-year-old father of two.

Trey Ross was shot and killed last June when a car pulled up next to his SUV on Gessner Road, and someone inside opened fire.

Police said the suspect was likely driving a Chevy Impala. Click here to see surveillance video.

Ross attended Texas A&M on a football scholarship and was planning to get married a week after he was killed.

"We miss him so much. He was my angel, my knight in shining armor. I love him. I miss him so much. If anybody knows anything, please help us bring this to justice," Ross? mother, Judy Ross, said.

The passenger in Ross? SUV was also shot, but survived.

Investigators say they don?t know why the SUV was targeted by the shooters.
