Bloomberg just released a report citing three unnamed sources?who name?specific details of Apple's next iPad. The iPad 3 will have a high-definition screen, 4G LTE networking and a powerful quad-core processor, says the news service. The report also says that the product will reach full production volume by February.

It's no surprise that the iPad 3 will have a better screen: The iPhone has long had the more beautiful "retina" screen, and a device like the iPad, meant for reading, should have one too. It's also no great shock that Apple would put a quad-core processor in there, especially given the positive reception of the Asus EeePad Transformer Prime. As you can see in the video below, the Prime appeals to gamers because of its quad-core processor.

What does shock me is the LTE wireless connectivity. Apple's strongest U.S. partners, AT&T and Verizon Wireless, both have LTE networks, and Sprint is rolling one out too. But Apple is often reluctant to jump on new wireless technologies, and if this report is to be believed, LTE would come to the iPad before it was even on the iPhone.

As for the February date, that sounds consistent with last year's shipping schedule: The company announced the iPad 2 on March 2, and had it in U.S. stores by March 10.

How do you say "keeping things professional" en espanol?

Despite their messy July split, their sexy respective rebounds and a brewing battle over custody of their 3-year-old twins, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony were anything but tense with one another at a Saturday Television Critics' Association panel for their Univision reality competition Q'Viva! - The Chosen in Pasadena, Calif.

PHOTOS: How J Lo's style has morphed for her men

Looking radiant and sexy in a blue leather dress with cutouts, Lopez, 42, ascended the stage with courteous assistance of her estranged husband of 7 years Anthony, 43.

PHOTOS: Marc and J Lo's romance

The parents to Emme and Max kept a very comfortable, open body language sitting next to one another onstage in director's chairs. Singer, designer and American Idol judge Lopez happily tapped her ex on the arm and gestured toward him during one point in the discussion. Later in the chat, Anthony responded in kind, tapping his ex's left hand to point our her flashy rings.

PHOTOS: J Lo's super sexy looks

What was it like working with Anthony again? "Same as it was any other time we worked together," Lopez told reporters. "We have a great time working together."

PHOTOS: 2012 horoscope predictions for J Lo and her new man Casper Smart

Indeed, Univision appears to be capitalizing on the couple's marital split; the tagline for the Latin American talent competition is "What would bring Marc and Jennifer together again?"

Q'Viva! premieres Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. on Univision.

Nikon D4 Ethernet tethered shooting hands-on (video)

After getting our eager mitts on Nikon's long overdue D3 successor, aptly named the D4, we got a second chance to revisit our fat-bodied, photo-taking friend at the company's CES booth. The 16.2MP DSLR features a 3.2-inch LCD screen and is capable of 1080p video capture at 30fps. But that's not why we went back for more and it's not why you're reading this right now. We were keen to put the D4's big, bad networking capabilities to the test -- one of which links an array of up to ten of the cameras together for simultaneous, remote shooting over WiFi. Unfortunately, this feature requires use of the TW-5A wireless dongle, which is still awaiting FCC certification and could not be demonstrated. Neither could the imaging company show off the one-to-one connection that allows an auxiliary camera to be controlled from a primary unit. We did get to briefly interact with the camera's native web server running on a laptop, from which you can snap shots, toggle settings (like ISO and shutter speed), playback and download your recordings. You can catch a peek of the interface and an extra look at this sought after shooter after the break.

(AP) ? While a growing nationwide strike and protests have already paralyzed daily life in Nigeria, the beating heart of its economy ? crude oil ? keeps pumping.

Now a powerful union says it will shut down all oil and natural gas production Sunday in a nation that remains crucial to U.S. energy supplies. The union's ability to enforce the shutdown across the swamps of Nigeria's southern delta to massive offshore oil fields remains in question, though Thursday's threat of a strike could sway global oil prices as traders worldwide remain concerned about supply.

Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation with more than 160 million people, has been paralyzed by a national strike that began Monday after the country's government abandoned subsidies that kept gasoline prices lower for consumers. Overnight, prices at the pump more than doubled, from $1.70 per gallon (45 cents per liter) to at least $3.50 per gallon (94 cents per liter). The costs of food and transportation also doubled.

Popular anger over losing one of the few benefits average Nigerians see from being an oil-rich nation, as well as disgust over government corruption, has led to demonstrations nationwide and related violence that has killed at least 12 people.

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, which represents about 20,000 workers, announced Thursday it would "be forced to go ahead and apply the bitter option of ordering the systematic shutting down of oil and gas production" if the government refused to reinstate the gas subsidies. Union president Babatunde Ogun said if fields are shut down, it could take "six months or one year" to restart them.

"We ... believe that if everything comes to a standstill, the government will budge," Ogun told journalists in Lagos.

Ogun also said the natural gas shutdown would turn off the nation's power grid, which is already in shambles.

The oil industry so far hasn't felt the effects of the national strike. Many of its operations are automated, both for efficiency and to avoid having staff work in the Niger Delta's maze of creeks, where criminal gangs and militants target workers for high-dollar kidnappings. Foreign companies also run large offshore fields, far from the streets and chaos of growing demonstrations across the country. Shipments from offshore platforms move immediately to market.

When pressed about how the union could affect the automated parts of the industry, Ogun did not offer an answer.

Most oil firms, including the dominant Royal Dutch Shell PLC, say they are monitoring the situation. Other companies with subsidiaries working in Nigeria include Chevron Corp., Exxon Mobil Corp., Italy's Eni SpA and French firm Total SA, which operate in tandem with the state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corp.

Levi Ajuonoma, a spokesman for the state-run firm, said it had not adjusted its production and shipping forecasts over the strike. It would take time for the nation to feel the impact of the strike, as oil and natural gas cargoes go out months ahead, meaning that supply would be available for the U.S.

However, it still could affect futures prices of oil on stock markets ? potentially raising the cost of gasoline for the consumer. Global oil prices rose when militants began several years of attacks on oil companies and crude oil pipelines in 2006.

Benchmark oil prices rose by $1.03 to $101.90 per barrel Thursday in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Prices rose on concerns of global supplies.

Nigeria is the fifth-largest oil exporter to the United States, and losing those supplies would force American refineries to replace 630,000 barrels of crude per day.

"As long as government is selling crude ... the impact to them will not be that significant," University of Ibadan economics professor Adeola Adenikinju said. "The fiscal nerve center of the economy has not really been touched."

The growing protests and attacks from a radical Islamist sect also put additional on a government already facing popular dissent following the removal of the fuel subsidies. Analysts warn that could raise the political risk in a nation with a young democracy and a history of military rulers.

"The subsidy issue provokes such strong emotions because it is viewed as one of the few benefits that Nigerians receive from living in an oil-producing nation," Barclays Capital said. "If the protests continue or gain momentum, they will pose a major challenge to the Jonathan government and potentially exhaust the capacity of an administration already facing a sustained security threat."

(AP Photo/Terry Gilliam, File)

(AP) ? After weeks of lopsided losses and blown leads, the Columbus Blue Jackets fired second-year coach Scott Arniel.

In announcing Arniel's dismissal and the elevation of assistant Todd Richards to interim head coach, general manager Scott Howson said the season had "gone off the rails."

Under Arniel, the Blue Jackets were just 11-25-5 this season ? the worst record in the NHL.

Richards was 77-71-16 as head coach of the Minnesota Wild from 2009-11. His first game leading Columbus will be Tuesday night in Chicago.

Howson announced the firing Monday, the morning after the club's latest dreadful loss: a 7-4 setback at Anaheim. The Ducks came into the game just one point ahead of the Blue Jackets' league-low 27 points but dominated throughout.

Howson said things had spiraled out of control recently.

"We were playing pretty good (after a bad start) until the middle of December and we were going in the right direction, but it's gone off the rails since then," he said on the team's website of the Blue Jackets' 2-8-1 mark since Dec. 15.

The Blue Jackets have blown eight games in which they led heading into the final period, the most in the NHL by a wide margin.

Just before meeting with the players on Monday morning, Richards said he did not plan wholesale changes.

"I've got a list of to-dos," he said. "I don't think it's big changes. It's little tweaks, little things here and there."

Arniel was hired as the fifth head coach in Blue Jackets history on June 8, 2010, and compiled a 45-60-18 record in 123 games.

In his first season, the Blue Jackets were a respectable 34-35-13 despite a lineup that included only one certifiable top-line player in perennial All-Star forward Rick Nash.

Last summer, Howson met the demands of many frustrated fans when he pulled off a major deal with Philadelphia to bring in high-scoring star Jeff Carter. Howson also traded for the rights to James Wisniewski and then signed him to a lucrative contract, locking up a puck-moving defenseman the franchise had long needed. Established veterans Vinny Prospal and Radek Martinek were also brought aboard.

But, for the most part, the season has been a disaster from the beginning.

Wisniewski sat out the first eight games for a head shot on Minnesota's Cal Clutterbuck in an exhibition game, and Carter was injured and missed games while Columbus stumbled to a 1-9-1 start ? the worst in franchise history.

Martinek also has sustained a concussion which has kept him out most of the season. To add to the Blue Jackets' woes, Carter suffered a separated shoulder in Sunday night's loss at Honda Center and will likely be out for an extended period.

"I really divided our season into three parts and the first part, we had a tough start," said Howson, who decided over the weekend that it was time to make a change. "I didn't think it was a fair basis for evaluation because of the Wisniewski suspension and all the injuries. Really, if you look at our record from the middle of November to the middle of December, it was pretty good. We were playing good hockey. We were playing better defensively. I think we were 7-5-3 in a 15-game period. The 11 games since then we've only had two wins and our play seems to be regressing."

Richards, a loyal assistant who was saddened by Arniel's firing, said it was a situation where everything seemed to go wrong.

"I don't think you could have thought about or created a scenario that actually got to this point," he said. "I don't think you could sit and dream it up. Just the things that went on, how we lost games and how it snowballed and manifested into bigger things."

Arniel was not Howson's first choice as head coach when he was hired. The job had been offered to Guy Boucher, who turned it down and then later took the top job with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Arniel, the seventh NHL head coach to lose his job this season, joined the Blue Jackets after serving as head coach of the AHL's Manitoba Moose from 2006-10. He led the Moose to a 181-106-33 record and four Calder Cup Playoffs appearances.

But his message didn't resonate with players and the team never showed any consistency under him. The club started his first season with a 14-6-0 record, but since then it is 31-54-18 with only eight regulation wins in the last 63 games.

Richards, in his first year with Columbus, was named Minnesota's second head coach and led the club to a 38-36-8 record in 2009-10 and a 39-35-8 mark in 2010-11.

He was an assistant with San Jose in 2008-09 before being hired by the Wild.

Now he faces half a season with no incentive to make the playoffs and a world of questions about the future.

"It'll be different," said Richards. "It'll be a challenge."

Rugby Union: Wood backed to lead England

World Cup winner Lawrence Dallaglio feels Tom Wood is the ideal man to take over as England captain and begin the rebuilding process.

The Red Rose are looking for a new skipper following Lewis Moody's decision to call time on his international career after England's abysmal displays at the World Cup.
With Martin Johnson also falling on his sword after the New Zealand debacle, Stuart Lancaster has been installed as the interim coach and will lead England in the defence of their Six Nations title.
Reports suggest that there will be a clear out of a number of the old guard when the squad for the opening clash with Scotland is named, with the likes of Mark Cueto, Mike Tindall and Nick Easter all set to be axed.
Wood, who plays for Northampton and has made nine appearances for England to date, is one of the up-and-coming stars that England will look to build their side around in the next few years and Dallaglio believes he has the edge over fellow back-row star Chris Robshaw when it comes to taking the captain's armband.
"Tom Wood fits the bill," he said. "He just shades it ahead of Chris Robshaw purely because he has spent much more time in the England team and in the international environment."

HP unveils new glass encased laptop (Reuters)

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) ? Hewlett-Packard Co on Monday unveiled a new glass-encased laptop computer as the largest computer maker stepped up its efforts to chip away at rival Apple Inc's stronghold in high-end PC market.

The laptop, called HP Envy 14 Spectre, is the Silicon Valley company's latest entry in the slim, ultrabook category of personal computers and is the first to use glass on the lid, display and palmrest.

The 14-inch laptop also boasts built-in wireless links to speakers and the ability to transfer website links from a nearby phone to the browser on the laptop using an emerging technology called near field communication (NFC).

The Specter will be available next month for a price starting at $1,400, making it more expensive than Apple's popular 13-inch MacBook Air.

PC sales were lackluster in 2011 as consumers turned increasingly to mobile devices from smartphones to tablets like Apple's iPad, while faltering economies put pressure on corporate spending on technology hardware.

But many analysts are expecting a bounceback in 2012 as HP and other PC makers begin to crank out smaller computers in the ultrabook category.

Abdulrahman El-Sayed: The Lament of a College Football Fan

As LSU and Alabama kickoff this season's final game, I'll be glad that this college football season is finally coming to an end.

Why? Because I love college football.

Since I can remember, Saturday mornings in the fall have been dedicated to watching college football pregame shows, fitting preludes to the chorus of pageantry, poise, and athleticism that echo in games played throughout the day. I live or die by the fate of my University of Michigan Wolverines.

But beyond the sheer excitement and the weekly saga, I realize now that my love for college football represents something deeper than the latent human desire to be entertained. Beyond the hype, the fanfare -- even the game itself -- the institution of college football calls to our greatest human aspirations. A worthy foil to the version of the game played on Sundays, college football is about more than big contracts and wayward celebrity lifestyles. It's about being part of something bigger, about playing for pride in one's school and for the love of the game, about the fact that no matter the odds, David can have his day against Goliath. And beyond those won on the field, college football's greatest victories are young men who have come to understand the values of teamwork, effort, determination, and commitment.

At least that used to be true, anyway.

No season has challenged my belief in the value of college football like this one. The accumulation of small blemishes over the off-season at some of college football's most storied programs -- Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee, Miami, USC, Auburn, and LSU (playing tonight for a national championship) -- were troubling enough. Stories of star players trading their memorabilia for tattoos, boosters using illegal money to sponsor sex parties for players, and coaches lying to cover it all up became more and more difficult to hear. But then the guillotine dropped mid-season with the tragic news out of Happy Valley, which saw the fall from grace of one of college football's greatest programs and the defamation of its most heralded coach -- a man who had embodied many of the higher callings of the institution -- for covering up something as despicable and wrong as a child sex abuse scandal to save his program.

This season has been devastating for those of us who believe that college football can be about more than just money and big egos.

But perhaps that's because it may not be about anything else anymore. Athletic departments at most FBS schools operate independently of the rest of the University -- their earnings aren't funneled back to promote education and provide scholarships (to non-athletes) like most of us think. That makes them, effectively, big multi-sport franchises of the NCAA, much like any given team in any big professional sports league. While they can't make money, per se, given their non-profit status, their employees certainly can. That's why football coaches and athletic directors are among the highest paid employees at many FBS universities. For example, according to the public register of employee salaries, the highest paid employee at LSU is John Chavis, the football team's defensive coordinator, earning $500,000 annually -- Les Miles is listed as earning only $300,000 (although it's well-known that he's on contract for $3.75 million per year, with performance bonuses -- meaning his full salary isn't even listed).

College football programs have found ways to generate money beyond ticket sales and television agreements. For example, my alma mater, the University of Michigan, signed a contract with Adidas in 2008 that pays the Athletic Department about $7.5 million a year in cash and merchandise to wear the three stripes. And when you watch tonight's game, you won't be watching the 2012 BCS National Championship game. You'll be watching the 2012 All State BCS National Championship Game -- like you watched the All State Sugar Bowl, the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, the Discover Orange Bowl, the Rose Bowl Game Presented by Vizio, not to mention the Capital One Bowl, the Chick-fil-a Bowl, the Little Ceasers Bowl, and the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl. Corporate funds backing these bowls largely end up in two places: Athletic Department coffers and the wallets of bowl executives. In a recent article, ESPN's Shaun Assael traces the money behind this year's All State Sugar Bowl. Greed, rather than the best interests of the game, often drives Bowl decisions -- including which teams get to play.

The influx of corporate money into College Football has raised the stakes for those involved -- from players, to coaches, to athletic department executives -- everyone wants a piece. Rather than relishing the opportunity to represent their universities, players see college as a farm system for the pros. Rather than forging men, coaches are forging paychecks. And rather than fostering meaningful academic experiences for their student-athletes, universities are banking off of their raw talents -- often delivering little in return.

This year, I'm closing the door on the most disheartening college football season in recent memory. And that's not because the football wasn't good -- it was great. But that's because this season, more than any other, demonstrated the power of money and greed to corrupt a beautiful institution.

But there's always next season.

Insurgents try to storm Afghan government building

(AP) ? Taliban insurgents tried to storm a government building in eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday, setting off a firefight that killed at least five people, police said.

Gen. Dawlat Khan Zadran, police chief of Paktika province, said four insurgents attempted to take over the government building in Sharan, the provincial capital, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of Kabul.

Three attackers and two policemen were killed in the ensuing firefight, Zadran said. Officers were still exchanging fire with the fourth guerrilla.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack and said it involved multiple targets. In a statement emailed to journalists, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the governor's office, the provincial reconstruction team and the intelligence headquarters were all hit.

Zadran, however, said the attack was confined to one building.

Paktika province borders Pakistan and is one of the main routes for Taliban fighters infiltrating into eastern Afghanistan from their sanctuaries across the border. It is also one of the main strongholds of the al-Qaida-linked Haqqani network, which has been blamed for a series of spectacular attacks, including suicide bombings inside Kabul.

Elsewhere, a joint Afghan and coalition raid killed seven suspected insurgents and captured 30 others in Balkh province, 180 miles (300 kilometers) north of Kabul. A military statement said the guerrillas used rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire to engage the security force. Caches of homemade explosives, pressure-plate bombs, weapons and ammunition also were seized.

In a separate development, officials said the U.S. and NATO are continuing to reorient their entire supply network to the so-called Northern Distribution Network through Russia and Central Asia, rather than through Pakistan, which served as the main conduit for the logistics chain in the past.

Pakistan shut down the alliance's main transit routes from the port of Karachi in November in response to a NATO air attack on a Pakistani border post that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

About 85 percent of military fuel supplies is now going through the northern route, said a U.S. official who could not be identified under standing rules. And nearly a third of other supplies that used to arrive through Pakistan are now using the alternate route.

For most of the 10-year war in Afghanistan, 90 percent of supplies shipped to the international force came through Pakistan, via the port of Karachi. But over the past three years, road and rail shipments from NATO's European members via Central Asia have expanded, and before the border incident accounted for more than half of all overland deliveries.

Social Impact of Communications Technology | Softize

Topics: communication technology, social media impact, social networks impact

Introduction:

Technology has surely revolutionized the world of communication. Social networking sites or social media has made it possible to share interests and connect people across the globe without any geographic, economic or political barriers. Social media services operate as an online platform that can be used to develop social relations with people of interest. The majority of the social networking services are internet based e.g. email, messengers and online communities. These online services provide users means of interaction. Users can share activities, events, interests and ideas with people in their networks. This type of communications technology has made lifestyle innovative and alleviated the distances.

However, besides the numerous advantages there are some disadvantages associated with social networking. It raises many social problems leaving significant impacts on lifestyle and overall performance of the individuals.

Historical Developments:

Initially, attempts were made to develop social networks using online services like Usenet, LISTSERV, ARPANET and BBS (Bulletin Board Services). These services then evolved into America Online, CompuServe and Prodigy with added features and enhancements. There were many other services that somehow served the users as a way to communicate and share (Fraser and Dutta, 2008).

Innovations in communication technology and social media came when Asian Avenue was launched in 1997 with some interesting features. Some people consider it as a prototype of Facebook. But, using this service was fairly complex for non-techies as it involved html coding and designing custom pages. Eventually, developments in communication technology gave birth of the recent sophisticated social networking sites like MySpace, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn etc. (Fraser and Dutta, 2008).

Social Impacts:

Social impacts of communication technology or social networking are extensive. Let us take the example of Facebook; it has numerous positive impacts in our social life. Despite general communication, Facebook is extensively being used by scientific communities and research oriented organizations to spread the latest developments in science and technology (Lai and Linda, 2007). Students and teachers are using Facebook as a tool to communicate. As most of the students already use it, teachers have also started to familiarize themselves to maintain an effective and trendy communication. Facebook can also be used as a tool for searching employment opportunities. Social activists use Facebook for grassroots organizing (Dijk, 2006).

There some bad social impacts of Facebook and other social networking sites. According to Dijk (2006), the most commonly discussed issue is about privacy as there is lots of online information about an individual that can be assessed and cause some other issues. Most of the schools and colleges have banned the use of Facebook or any other social networking during school hours as it distracts the student?s attention from studies. Moreover, social networking works like an addiction and users spend most of their time sitting idle in front of computer screen. This has greatly influenced the social aspects of life (Lai and Linda, 2007).

Conclusion:

Social networking has played a great role in shaping the world as a global village. There are various types of services being used these days for community purposes to keep a healthy interaction among the people having common interests. Through time, social media has modified from simple forms of communication to the most advanced social websites that provide momentarily updates about the user activities in a network. However, there are some bad social impacts of using these sites like Facebook during school our office timings. Therefore, educational institutes and offices don?t allow these websites. We have also observed that long sessions of interaction in online communities have influenced the offline lifestyle and users are not well aware of what is going on around their town even. In short, we can conclude that social networking can be useful if used purposefully and it is equally important to maintain an active offline social life.

'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' sequel is still on track, says Sony

'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' has grossed less than expected, but a Sony representative says the sequel is still happening

It feels kind of weird to say that director David Fincher?s adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has performed somewhat below expectations at the box office to date.

Skip to next paragraph Screen Rant

Screen Rant had a humble start back in 2003 as a place to rant about some of the dumber stuff related to the movie industry. Since then, the site has grown to cover more and more TV and movie news (and not just the dumb stuff) along with sometimes controversial movie reviews. The goal at Screen Rant is to cover stories and review movies from a middle ground/average person perspective.

Recent posts

On the one hand, it?s a $90 million project from a high-profile filmmaker that is based on an international best-selling novel that has only grossed $60 million in the U.S. so far; on the other hand, it?s an extremely?adults-only, R-Rated murder mystery full of graphic content and fatalistic atmosphere that?s been generating excellent word-of-mouth. So, those financial returns are about as good as one could (reasonably) expect.

Nonetheless, there?s been some question as to whether or not Sony is actively pressing ahead with an adaptation of the next installment in author Stieg Larsson?s Millennium trilogy, The Girl Who Played with Fire, because of Dragon Tattoo?s so-so box office performance. According to EW, that is in fact the case.

A Sony representative informed the publication that Girl Who Played with Fire remains on-target for a late 2013 release date. Dragon Tattoo leads Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig are likewise reportedly already signed on to reprise their roles as Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist, respectively, in both the sequel and the (for now, theoretical) third franchise chapter, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet?s Nest.

Dragon Tattoo writer Steve Zaillian is in the early stage of scripting Girl Who Played with Fire, which Fincher has the option to direct. While he has not yet committed to the project, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker has admitted that (should he sign on) he would prefer to shoot both the second and third Millennium book adaptations?back-to-back, for both practical and artistic purposes.

Fincher?s take on Dragon Tattoo has been playing very well with professional critics and casual moviegoers alike; similarly, it ranked pretty high on our favorite 2011 movies list. That sets it apart from relatively recent costly studio franchise titles that only did so-so business in theaters in comparison to their actual production budget, but were also critical duds?(ex. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, TRON: Legacy)? and yet, sequels to both are being developed, with G.I. Joe 2 having already completed production.

In addition, Dragon Tattoo should continue to play well during the slow-going month of January and will probably (*knock on wood*) manage to snag a handful of Oscar nods in the near future ? which will also help keep it in the limelight.

That?s all to say: Dragon Tattoo may not be a box office smash, but it should ultimately prove to be profitable enough to ensure that Sony doesn?t abandon its franchise plans.

We will continue to keep you updated on the status of The Girl Who Played with Fire as the story develops.

Tennessee coaches headed to Washington

SEATTLE (AP) ? Justin Wilcox is leaving Tennessee for a chance to be the answer to Washington's defensive woes.

Washington announced the hiring of Wilcox as the Huskies new defensive coordinator on Monday with the hope that Wilcox's return to the Pacific Northwest will equal a return to prominence for the Huskies defense. Wilcox will replace Nick Holt, who was fired Saturday after Washington surrendered 777 yards and 67 points in an Alamo Bowl loss to Baylor. It was the most yards ever allowed by Washington and the second-most points and came on a national staged that exposed all of the Huskies weaknesses.

It's now up to Wilcox to fix those holes.

"I'm grateful for this opportunity," Wilcox said in a statement. "Washington is a place where you can win big, and I'm excited to work with coach Sarkisian in developing a championship-caliber football program. Our first order of business is hitting the recruiting trail, and I can't wait to get started."

ESPN.com first reported Wilcox's hiring.

Wilcox isn't coming alone. Linebackers coach Peter Sirmon is leaving Tennessee as well to take the same job with the Huskies. Both Wilcox and Sirmon have significant Northwest ties ? each played at Oregon and Wilcox's big break came as defensive coordinator for Boise State.

Along with Holt, Washington also dismissed linebackers coach Mike Cox and safeties coach Jeff Mills. The moves came after Washington had the worst statistical defense in school history.

"I am excited to welcome Justin and Peter to Washington, as they are two of the brightest young coaches in the country," Sarkisian said. "Both are natives of the Northwest and have strong recruiting ties in the area which compliments their tremendous coaching abilities."

Wilcox and Sirmon are the latest in a string of departures from Tennessee, which is still struggling to rebuild after back-to-back coaching turnovers following the 2008 and 2009 seasons. Wide receivers coach Charlie Baggett and tight ends and special teams coach Eric Russell also have left the staff of Volunteers coach Derek Dooley.

Wilcox's defense was one of the bright spots in a disappointing 5-7 season for Tennessee. The Vols allowed 340.5 yards and 22.6 points per game, ranking them among the top 35 teams in the nation in both categories.

Wilcox, 35, was set to earn $700,000 at Tennessee in 2012. He and Sirmon were teammates and roommates Oregon, though Wilcox first made a name for himself in four seasons as defensive coordinator at Boise State, where his players lead the Western Athletic Conference in total defense and scoring defense from 2006-2009 and compiled a 49-4 overall record.

Sirmon, 34, a veteran NFL linebacker, spent the 2010 season as a graduate assistant for the Vols and was promoted to linebackers coach for 2011. He was set to earn $175,000 in 2012.

Washington officials said contract details had not been finalized for either Wilcox or Sirmon.

The pair will be stepping in to lead a defense with ongoing troubles that were highlighted in the loss to Baylor. The Huskies gave up 65 points, 446 yards rushing and 615 total yards to Stanford this season, then another 40 points and 426 yards to Southern California. Even when the Huskies held Oregon to under 400 total yards, it came in a 34-17 defeat.

Only four times in 13 games this season did Washington hold an opponent under 400 total yards, and just 11 times in Holt's 38 games in charge of the Huskies defense. Washington's 2011 defense set school records for most points allowed, total touchdowns, yards passing allowed and total yards allowed.

Holt's firing came almost three years to the day after he was introduced as the defensive answer to Washington's woes. He was wooed from Southern California by a contract that trumped that of some other head coaches in the conference and the autonomy to run the defense as he wanted. Holt was scheduled to make $650,000 in 2012.

Even though he's an Oregon grad, Washington fans might be enticed by what Wilcox was able to do against his alma mater while at Boise State. Wilcox was 2-0 against the Ducks, including the 2009 season opener when Boise State beat Oregon 19-8 and held the Ducks to 152 yards in a game that became more memorable for a postgame punch and not the Broncos defensive performance. It's one of just two games in the last 10 years that Oregon has been held under 200 yards of offense.

Wilcox left Boise State after the 2009 season when the Broncos finished 14-0 and beat TCU in the Fiesta Bowl.

Gaza's Hamas premier visits Turkey (AP)

ISTANBUL ? Turkey's prime minister on Sunday welcomed efforts toward reconciliation between the rival Palestinian factions during a meeting with the Hamas premier of the Gaza Strip, Turkey's state-run news agency reported.

Ismail Haniyeh is on an official tour of the Muslim world, his first trip outside the blockaded territory since the Islamist group took over Gaza in 2007. Turkey is trying to help efforts toward a reconciliation between the rival Palestinian Hamas and Fatah factions.

Haniyeh met Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu at the Turkish leader's Istanbul residence. Erdogan expressed hope that the Palestinians "attain an all-encompassing umbrella organization with strong democratic representation powers," the Anadolu Agency reported.

Erdogan's spokesman was not available for comment.

On Monday, the Hamas prime minister will meet the head of an Islamic aid group whose Gaza-bound vessel was the target of a deadly raid by Israeli troops in 2010. Turkey's ties with Israel, a former ally, deteriorated sharply over the flotilla raid that killed nine activists on the Turkish boat, and Erdogan has demanded that Israel lift all restrictions on the Palestinian territory.

Hamas officials say the goal of Haniyeh's trip is to improve ties with Muslim countries swept up in the uprisings shaking the Arab world.

Hamas and Fatah joined in a short-lived unity government following 2006 parliamentary elections. But the following year, the alliance shattered and Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip during several days of fighting, leaving the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority in charge in the West Bank. Repeated attempts at reconciliation failed, and both sides have cracked down on the other in their respective territories.

Reconciliation talks currently under way with Egyptian mediation appear to be making progress, with both Fatah and Hamas saying they hope to allow Palestinian elections to go ahead in 2012.

TV ratings rise for NBA's season openers on Christmas Day

NEW YORK (AP) -- NBA fans seem more excited about basketball's return than bitter about the lockout based on television ratings for the league's delayed openers.

The five Christmas games Sunday attracted large audiences, with the Bulls-Lakers matchup drawing the third-highest preliminary rating for a regular-season game on ABC. The 6.5 overnight rating trailed only a 7.3 for last year's highly anticipated Heat-Lakers showdown and a 7.9 for another meeting between Miami and LA in 2004.

Chris Paul's Clippers debut in the nightcap against the Warriors earned a 2.3 overnight, up 77 percent over last year's Portland-Golden State telecast. It was ESPN's highest-rated Christmas prime-time game.

The earlier night game on ESPN -- Magic-Thunder -- drew a 1.9 overnight, up 36 percent from to last year's Denver-Oklahoma City matchup. The afternoon's finals rematch on ABC, the Heat's rout of the Mavericks, earned a 5.6 overnight, up 6 percent from Boston-Orlando last year.

The Celtics-Knicks game on TNT to open the day drew a 4.1 overnight. The early game on ESPN last year, Bulls-Knicks, had a 2.7 on ESPN.

Ratings represent the percentage of all homes with televisions tuned to a program. Overnight ratings measure the country's largest markets.

7.0 sea quake shakes Tokyo, but causes no damage (AP)

TOKYO ? A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck under the sea south of Japan on Sunday, shaking buildings in the capital but causing no apparent damage or tsunami.

The quake struck near the uninhabited island of Torishima in the Pacific Ocean, about 600 kilometers (370 miles) south of Tokyo, and its epicenter was about 370 kilometers (230 miles) below the sea, the Meterological Agency said. It did not generate a tsunami.

Buildings in the Tokyo area shook, but no damage or injuries were reported. Express trains in northern and central Japan were suspended temporarily for safety checks but later resumed.

No abnormalities were reported at power plants, including the crippled nuclear power plant in northeast Japan hit by the March earthquake and tsunami, public broadcaster NHK reported.

A massive earthquake and tsunami March 11 left nearly 20,000 people dead or missing. Japan, which lies along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," is one of the world's most seismically active countries.
