World Cup winner Lawrence Dallaglio feels Tom Wood is the ideal man to take over as England captain and begin the rebuilding process.
The Red Rose are looking for a new skipper following Lewis Moody's decision to call time on his international career after England's abysmal displays at the World Cup.
With Martin Johnson also falling on his sword after the New Zealand debacle, Stuart Lancaster has been installed as the interim coach and will lead England in the defence of their Six Nations title.
Reports suggest that there will be a clear out of a number of the old guard when the squad for the opening clash with Scotland is named, with the likes of Mark Cueto, Mike Tindall and Nick Easter all set to be axed.
Wood, who plays for Northampton and has made nine appearances for England to date, is one of the up-and-coming stars that England will look to build their side around in the next few years and Dallaglio believes he has the edge over fellow back-row star Chris Robshaw when it comes to taking the captain's armband.
"Tom Wood fits the bill," he said. "He just shades it ahead of Chris Robshaw purely because he has spent much more time in the England team and in the international environment."
