Houston (AFP) - Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak collapsed at halftime of his team's National Football League home game against Indianapolis and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The 52-year-old coach fell to the ground in pain near the 20-yard line on the Texans' sideline on Sunday as he was walking off the field after Houston had taken a 21-3 halftime lead over the Colts.

Kubiak attempted to sit up, but was unable to stay upright. He was taken off the field and into the locker room on a stretcher before leaving the stadium in an ambulance.

Wade Phillips, a former NFL coach now serving as the Texans' defensive coordinator, assumed the coaching duties in Kubiak's absence.

NFL game telecaster NBC reported that Phillips said the hospital trip was a precautionary move and that Kubiak's heart rate and pulse were both fine.

A Texans spokesman later said that Kubiak did not lose consciousness and that his family was with him.
